Combining the proven curriculum of the Motorcycle Safety Foundation® with the passion of Harley-Davidson, the Rider's Edge New Rider Course offers unrivaled hands-on instruction that will bring your motorcycling dreams to life and give you the skills and confidence you need to get the most out of riding.
THE NEW RIDER COURSE
The Rider's Edge® New Rider Course is a mixture of classroom time and actual riding that delivers the basics of motorcycle operation in Harley-Davidson style. You will be taught by dedicated instructors certified by both the Motorcycle Safety Foundation® (MSF) and Harley-Davidson to provide top notch instruction in a relaxed, encouraging environment that promotes camaraderie and self-confidence. After passing a written test and a riding skills evaluation, you'll receive an official MSF RiderCourse SM Completion Card, which may qualify you for discounts on motorcycle insurance, depending on the provider. More than that, you'll start a journey that will last a lifetime.
RequirementsAll New Rider Course students MUST have their Illinois motorcycle learner’s permit before taking the New Rider Course. You may pick up the motorcycle operator’s manual and take the written test at any Secretary of State office. You will also need:
To know how to ride a bicycle;
Jeans;
Sturdy over-the-ankle boots or shoes;
full-fingered motorcycle gloves;
a heavy long-sleeved shirt or jacket;
protective eyewear and
a DOT approved full face helmet.(A limited number of loaner helmets are available.) Half helmets my not be used.
The course is conducted over 4 or 5 days. All classes are mandatory, so make sure the schedule will work for you. Class times are as follows:
Chose a schedule based on what works best for you. Classes are added periodically throughout the season.
Tune-Up Refresher Courses for riders that already have their M license (Range Only) are available upon request.

MotorcycleYou will be riding a 492cc Buell® Blast® motorcycle — a responsive, mid-weight streetbike that's easy to handle and rider-friendly. The Blast® will have you feeling in control, it is a great first bike that can take you as far as you want to go.
Rider’s Edge Skilled Rider Course (SRC) for Experienced Riders
This Skilled Rider Course is designed for riders that have a minimum of 1 year riding experience or 3000 miles of experience. The SRC provides critiqued and coached practice for experienced motorcycle riders using their own motorcycles. The SRC is a one day course that is 90% riding and 10% classroom. The Rider’s Edge SRC compliments our New Rider Course (NRC) and is intended to provide the next step in motorcyclist development. This course is also designed for the seasoned motorcyclist who is looking for additional skills and training.
The Skilled Rider Course is mostly comprised of riding exercises with a minimum of classroom instruction. The class is scheduled for an entire day from 8:00 am to 6:00pm. The core curriculum for this class is provided by the Motorcycle Safety Foundation (MSF) with additional materials provided by Harley-Davidson’s Rider’s Edge program.
The fee for this class is $95 if you are using your own bike or $145 if you would like to use one of our Buell Blast motorcycles. Registration forms are available here or at Illinois Harley-Davidson/Buell.
Requirements
All SRC students MUST have a valid motorcycle license. You will also need the following:
A street safe motorcycle;
Proof of insurance for your motorcycle;
Long pants (Jeans work fine);
Sturdy over-the-ankle boots;
Full-fingered motorcycle gloves;
A heavy long-sleeved shirt or jacket;
Protective eyewear (sunglasses are fine).;
A DOT full faced helmet. Half helmets may not be worn. We have plenty of loner helmets available if you do not have a suitable helmet.
Our range has clean indoor bathroom facilities. We provide drinks and snacks while out on the range. We take frequent breaks during the various riding exercises. While on the range we will break for lunch for one hour.
