Save-a-Vet K9 and Soldier

Illinois Harley-Davidson joins many Northern Illinois and Southern Wisconsin Harley dealers in supporting Save-A-Vet. Save-A-Vet is a 501(c)(3) charitable organization set up to save military working dogs after their service to our country is complete. Due to their specialized training and handling, these war dogs cannot be adopted out to regular families, which is where Save-A-Vet comes in. Sometimes referred to as “the other forgotten soldier”, Save-A-Vet aims to provide a comfortable home for these canines.

In July 2009 we were one of ten Harley-Davidson dealer starting points for the Save-A-Vet poker run/rally fundraiser. The event attracted over 400 riders and included stops at many of Northern Illinois’ most popular biker-friendly establishments. The poker run finished up with a festival honoring the K-9 vets at the McHenry County Fairgrounds in Woodstock Illinois.

Save-A-Vet, the other forgotten soldier, is bringing home its fourth working dog.

On Wednesday October 14, 2009, at 11:34pm, Military Working Dog Nero will be arriving at Chicago O’Hare, IL. Nero, a 7 year old German shepherd was trained in explosives at Lackland Air force Base in Texas. After which he was transferred to Naval Base Kitsap, Washington. At MWD Nero’s 3 year mark he was diagnosed with back problems and other issues, at which time he was sent back to Lackland Air force Base for surgery. Upon completion of surgery, Nero was expected to have a full recovery back at Kitsap. 4 years later and approx., 6 handlers, Nero was put up for adoption. Due to his history and temperament, the military was having difficulty finding a suitable home for this specific veteran. This is when Nero’s handlers brought Nero to Save-A-Vet. Nero will be getting escorted to Chicago by, Vietnam Veteran Keith Lawler. Keith is the past post commander and district commander of the American Legion, District of Washington, and a proud supporter of Save-A-Vet.

MWD Dexter was Save-A-Vet’s first K9 rescue on December 30, 2008. Dexter’s most known for his heroic act in 2004 when he detected a garbage truck full of explosives in Iraq, trying to gain entrance to Abu Ghraib Prison. It was estimated that Dexter saved the lives of over 1,000 US Troops. In addition to Dexter’s accomplishments overseas, he has been the first K9 in history, to be accepted into the American Legion as a cardholding member.

MWD Alan, Save-A-Vet’s second, served with the 947th Military Police Detachment at Fort Myer, Virginia. He has protected people like the Vice President, First Lady, and foreign dignitaries at home and abroad.

Police K9 Ando came to Save-A-Vet only a few months ago. Ando is credited with having one of the largest narcotics busts in the State of North Carolina.
